Making your child's move easier.
So your family is moving. Join the crowd! Research shows that
a whopping 20 percent of the population will move this year alone. Of course, that doesn't
make it any easier. As you get caught up in preparing for your move, don't forget that
your child is feeling many of the same pressures that you are. Moving is one of the most
stressful times in anyone's life. The purpose of this page is to help your child deal with
that stress. Here are some things to keep in
mind:
- Try to keep a positive attitude about the move, your child
will not be excited and optimistic unless you are.
- Allow children to ask questions and to express their
complaints or concerns.
- Try to meet the neighbors and have the children spend time
together prior to the move. This will help them establish friends so they feel more at
home after the move.
- Let them help pack their belongings so they feel like they
participated in the move.
Making a new house a home.
Just as it is important to let your children
participate in the packing of their belongings, it is also vital to let them help with the
unpacking. Getting their rooms organized should be a top priority, once you reach your
destination. This will make them feel that this strange house is now their new home.
Consider keeping some boxes from the move for kids to play with. Old moving boxes make
great forts, castles, or anything else they imagine. |
